So this is what I found inside her backpack the other day. Her favorite thing is art. I can see her mind just wandering and her gears turning when she is making art. She sticks out her tongue a little and cocks her head from side to side, steps back examining her progress and when she is done she screams, "MOMMY, LOOK AT THIS!" For some reason, she didn't get so excited about this one. Usually she can't wait to shove any bit of scrap paper with a scribble on it in my face and ask me what I think. I know that art class is every Wednesday and Friday for her class and can usually expect to swap out the previous masterpiece on the fridge or bulletin board for the newest. But here it was, a Monday and I was zipping up her bag after homework and saw this peeking up at me. I pulled it out and was astonished. I know, I know. It's a mom thing to say, "Yes darling, it's brilliant!" to everything your children create and most times honestly believe it, but this pastel drawing left me with honest to goodness awe. I looked at it and my first thought was, if I saw this in a gallery, I'd buy it! There's just something about the colors intertwining and the exubrancy of them! The way the red looks like a real heart; the way there is a hint of something else going on but you can't quite put your finger on it. My half-sister Sarah who is currently in art school in Deleware told me it looks like a piece by the artist Cy Twombly. I googled his work and she is right. Only I think hers is better! But then again, yes I'm biased.
